Zinnia Zinderella Peach (Zinnia elegans) is unlike any zinnia you've grown before. Its distinctive pompom blooms are built in layers — a raised, textured golden-yellow centre with a deep burgundy eye, ringed by soft blush, peach, and cream outer petals that fade and shift as the flower matures. Growing Tips for New Zealand

Zinnias love warmth, so wait until the soil has warmed before sowing — from October onwards is ideal in most parts of NZ. Seeds germinate in 5–10 days in warm soil. Sow direct into a sunny, well-drained bed, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before your last frost date and transplant once conditions are warm. Space plants 30–40 cm apart and pinch out the growing tip when young to encourage bushy, multi-stemmed plants with more blooms. Water at the base to avoid powdery mildew, and deadhead or cut regularly to keep the flowers coming all season long.

✋ The wiggle test: Not sure if a bloom is ready to cut? Hold the stem about 10 cm below the flower head and give it a gentle wiggle — if the head flops around, give it a few more days. When it holds firm and stays put, it's ready. And here's the secret: if you can wait just a little longer than you think you should, you'll be rewarded with an even fuller, more open bloom. Patience pays off!
