Lavender English Seeds — Lavandula angustifolia
The Timeless Cottage Garden Classic
English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the most beloved and versatile plants in the cottage garden. Producing slender spires of soft purple-blue blooms above silvery-grey aromatic foliage, English lavender is a sensory delight — beautiful to look at, heavenly to smell, and irresistible to bees and butterflies. Wonderfully hardy and long-lived, it is equally at home lining a garden path, spilling over a low wall, or massed in a sunny border. A true garden staple that never goes out of style.
Why Gardeners Love It
- 💜 Soft purple-blue blooms — classic lavender colour, beautiful in the garden and in posies
- 🌿 Silvery-grey aromatic foliage — ornamental year-round, even when not in flower
- 🐝 Outstanding pollinator plant — bees and butterflies absolutely love it
- ☀️ Drought tolerant once established — thrives in hot, dry conditions
- 📏 Slightly taller than Hidcote — a little more height and presence in the border than the compact Hidcote variety
- 🏡 Wonderfully versatile — borders, pathways, pots, hedging, and cutting gardens
- 💐 Perfect for drying — harvest stems for dried arrangements, sachets, and potpourri
Growing Tips for New Zealand
English lavender thrives in full sun and well-drained soil — it dislikes wet feet, so avoid heavy clay or poorly drained positions. Sow seeds indoors from August to October, pressing lightly onto the surface of seed-raising mix as they need light to germinate. Germination can be slow and variable (2–6 weeks) — patience pays off! Transplant seedlings outdoors once established, spacing 45–60 cm apart. Once established, lavender is very drought tolerant and low maintenance. Trim lightly after flowering to keep plants compact and encourage repeat blooming.
💡 Grower's tip: Lavender grown from seed will show some natural variation in flower colour and habit — this is part of the charm of growing from seed and often produces some lovely surprises!
