Purpletop Vervain Seeds — Verbena bonariensis
A Beloved Cottage Garden Classic — Airy Clouds of Vivid Purple on Tall, Transparent Stems
Verbena bonariensis is one of the most universally loved and widely grown cottage garden perennials — a tall, airy, see-through plant that weaves effortlessly through borders and creates a magical haze of vivid purple from summer through to autumn. Growing to around 1.2–1.5m tall on slender, branching, almost leafless stems, it produces clusters of tiny, intensely vivid purple-violet flowers at the tips of every branch, held aloft like a constellation of colour above the garden. Its transparent, see-through habit means it can be planted at the front or middle of the border without obscuring anything behind it — it simply adds a layer of colour and movement that transforms everything around it. An outstanding cut flower, an irresistible magnet for butterflies and bees, and one of the most reliable and long-flowering perennials you can grow. A garden essential.
Why Gardeners Love It
- 💜 Vivid purple-violet flowers from summer to autumn — clusters of tiny intensely coloured purple-violet blooms held at the tips of tall branching stems; one of the most richly coloured and long-flowering perennials available
- 🦋 Irresistible to butterflies — one of the very best butterfly plants you can grow; butterflies are drawn to the flowers in extraordinary numbers throughout the season
- 🌿 Tall and transparent — the perfect see-through plant — slender branching stems to 1.5m create an airy, transparent effect that layers beautifully over other plants without obscuring them
- ✂️ Excellent cut flower — long stems and long-lasting blooms make Verbena bonariensis a wonderful addition to summer arrangements and posies
- 🌱 Self-seeds freely — once established, it self-seeds reliably and gently around the garden, popping up in unexpected and always pleasing combinations with neighbouring plants
- 🌱 Easy to grow — grows to 1.2–1.5m — vigorous, reliable, and long-flowering; well-suited to borders, cutting gardens, and cottage gardens across NZ
Growing Tips for New Zealand
Sow Verbena bonariensis in trays in late winter to spring onto moist seed-raising mix; press seeds lightly onto the surface as they benefit from light to germinate. Transplant seedlings to 45–60cm apart in a sunny position with well-drained soil. Verbena bonariensis is drought tolerant once established and thrives in warm, sunny NZ conditions. It will often overwinter in mild NZ climates and self-seed freely, returning reliably year after year. Deadhead lightly to extend flowering, or allow to set seed for a self-sustaining colony. Stake in exposed positions if needed.
