The Spinach That Loves the Heat

Spinach Summer Solstice (Spinacia oleracea) is a standout variety specifically bred for warm-season growing — making it the ideal choice for NZ gardeners who want to keep harvesting spinach well into summer. Summer Solstice produces smooth, medium-green leaves with a mild, pleasant flavour, and its exceptional bolt resistance means it stays productive far longer than standard spinach varieties when temperatures rise. A brilliant solution for the summer garden gap.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • ☀️ Outstanding bolt resistance — bred specifically for warm-season growing
  • 🌿 Smooth, tender leaves — mild flavour, great raw or cooked
  • 📅 Extended harvest season — keeps producing long after other spinaches have bolted
  • Fast-growing — ready to harvest in 35–45 days
  • 🥗 Versatile in the kitchen — salads, smoothies, stir-fries, soups, and more

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Summer Solstice is the spinach to reach for when the weather warms up. Sow direct from September through to February for a summer harvest, or year-round in milder NZ regions. Sow seeds 1 cm deep, thinning to 15 cm apart. Prefers a sunny to partly shaded position in rich, moist, well-drained soil — a little afternoon shade will help extend the harvest in the hottest months. Water regularly and feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser to encourage lush leafy growth. Harvest outer leaves as needed for a cut-and-come-again crop.

💡 Grower's tip: For the longest possible harvest, sow in a spot that gets morning sun but is shaded from the hottest afternoon sun. This simple trick can add weeks to your picking season!
