Romance and Colour in the Cottage Garden

Shirley Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is one of the most beloved annuals you can grow. Its delicate, tissue-paper blooms in soft shades of white, pink, salmon, red, and lilac — many with a beautiful white base and contrasting petal edges — bring an effortless, romantic charm to borders, meadows, and cutting gardens alike. Few flowers capture the gentle spirit of a cottage garden quite like this timeless classic.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🌸 Exquisite soft pastel blooms — single and semi-double flowers in a dreamy mix of white, pink, salmon, red, and lilac
  • ✂️ Wonderful cut flower — pick in bud for the longest vase life; stunning in informal arrangements
  • 🐝 Loved by bees and pollinators — a rich nectar source throughout the flowering season
  • 🌱 Very easy to grow — direct sow and establish quickly; ideal for beginner gardeners
  • 🌿 Self-seeds freely — naturalises beautifully in borders and meadow plantings for repeat displays year after year

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow directly onto the surface of prepared soil in a sunny position — do not cover, as seeds need light to germinate. Shirley Poppies prefer cool conditions for germination, so sow in autumn or early spring for best results in NZ. Thin seedlings to 15–20 cm apart. Plants grow to 60–90 cm tall and flower from late spring through summer. They self-seed gently, so leave a few spent heads to naturalise in the border.
