The Florist's Favourite Filler Flower

Queen Anne's Lace (Ammi majus) is one of the most elegant and versatile flowers you can grow. Delicate, lacy white umbels float on tall, branching stems like clouds of fine lacework — beautiful in the garden and absolutely indispensable in the vase. A staple of cottage gardens and cutting patches the world over, it adds an airy, romantic quality to any planting or arrangement.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • ☁️ Exquisite lacy white umbels — delicate, intricate flower heads on tall branching stems
  • ✂️ The ultimate cut flower filler — pairs beautifully with virtually any other flower in arrangements
  • 📏 Grows 60–100 cm tall — elegant and airy in borders and cutting gardens
  • 🐝 Outstanding for pollinators — a magnet for beneficial insects, hoverflies, and bees
  • 🌱 Easy to grow — direct sow into well-drained soil; self-seeds freely once established
  • 🌿 Long vase life — cut when flowers are half open for the longest lasting arrangements

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow seeds directly into well-drained soil in a sunny position in autumn or early spring. Ammi prefers cool growing conditions and will bolt in summer heat, so autumn sowing gives the best results across most NZ regions. Scatter seeds thinly and rake lightly — they need some light to germinate. Thin seedlings to 20–30 cm apart. Stake in exposed positions as stems can be top-heavy when in full bloom.
