A Winter Garden Hero

Purple Sprouting Broccoli (Brassica oleracea) is one of the most rewarding vegetables you can grow in a New Zealand garden. Sow in late summer or autumn and it quietly gets on with growing through the cooler months, then rewards you with a generous harvest of tender, deep purple florets in late winter and early spring β€” just when the garden needs it most.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • πŸ’œ Beautiful deep purple florets β€” striking in the garden and on the plate
  • 🌿 Harvests in late winter to early spring β€” fills the hungry gap when little else is ready
  • βœ‚οΈ Cut-and-come-again β€” the more you pick, the more it produces
  • πŸ₯¦ Packed with nutrition β€” rich in vitamins C and K, iron, and antioxidants
  • 🌱 Hardy and reliable β€” handles NZ winters with ease

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow seeds in late summer to early autumn (February–April) into seed-raising mix, then transplant seedlings to a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil once they reach 10–15 cm. Space plants 45–60 cm apart. Water regularly and feed with a balanced fertiliser through autumn. Harvest florets when tight and firm, cutting the central head first to encourage side shoots. Stake taller plants in exposed positions.
