Poppy Amazing Grey Seeds — Papaver rhoeas
One of the Most Extraordinary Poppies You Can Grow — Rare Smoky Grey Double Blooms with an Otherworldly Beauty
Papaver rhoeas ‘Amazing Grey’ is one of the most unusual and captivating poppies in existence — a hardy cool-season annual that produces large, fully double blooms in a colour palette unlike anything else in the garden. The flowers are extraordinary: deeply ruffled, tissue-paper petals ranging from pure white through to smoky grey and soft lavender, with individual blooms often displaying both white and grey on a single flower — a natural variation that makes every bloom uniquely beautiful. There is nothing quite like a drift of Amazing Grey in full bloom — the colours shift and shimmer in different lights, from cool silver-grey in the morning to warm lavender in the afternoon sun. Tall, graceful stems carry the blooms above the foliage, nodding gently in the breeze with an effortless, romantic charm. Easy to grow from seed and quick to establish, it self-sows readily and will return year after year once settled in. A genuine collector’s poppy and a must-have for gardeners who love something truly different.

Growing Tips for New Zealand
Sow Papaver rhoeas Amazing Grey direct where it is to flower — poppies do not like to be transplanted and perform best when sown in situ. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface of well-prepared, free-draining soil and press in lightly; do not cover deeply as seeds need light to germinate. Sow in autumn (March–May) for spring blooms, or in early spring (August–September) once the worst frosts have passed. Thin seedlings to 20–30cm apart once large enough to handle. Choose a sunny to lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. Water regularly until established, then reduce as plants are reasonably drought tolerant once growing strongly. Allow some plants to set seed at the end of the season for a self-sowing colony that returns each year with no effort. Perfect for cottage borders, wildflower areas, and cutting gardens throughout NZ.
