Rich Raspberry-Crimson Drama for the Cottage Garden

The Pages (Lupinus polyphyllus) is one of the most distinctive lupins you can grow — tall, commanding spires of rich raspberry-crimson flowers with no white, deepening to a deeper blue-crimson at the tips as the blooms mature. This unique colour shift makes The Pages truly special and instantly recognisable. A Chelsea Flower Show favourite and a beloved classic of the cottage garden, it is equally magnificent in a NZ garden — and of course, who cannot be inspired by the huge natural displays on the Mainland!

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🌸 Unique raspberry-crimson blooms — rich, saturated colour with no white, deepening beautifully as flowers mature
  • 📏 Impressive height — flower spires reach 90–120cm, creating bold vertical impact
  • 🐝 Excellent pollinator plant — a favourite of bumblebees and other native bees
  • 💐 Beautiful cut flower — long elegant stems with dramatic colour perfect for fresh arrangements
  • 🌿 Easy to grow — reliable and rewarding from seed with minimal fuss
  • 🏡 Cottage garden classic — a timeless perennial that returns year after year

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow lupin seeds in autumn or early spring for flowers in the first or second season. Lupins prefer a cool start — sow direct into well-drained, slightly acidic soil in a sunny position, or start in trays and transplant when small. Scarify or soak seeds overnight before sowing to improve germination. They dislike being moved once established, so choose your spot carefully. Deadhead spent spikes to encourage a second flush of flowers. Lupins are a perennial in cooler NZ regions and will return reliably each spring.
