Deep Violet Spikes and Intoxicating Fragrance for the NZ Garden

Lavender Hidcote (Lavandula angustifolia) is one of the most beloved and reliable lavenders in the world — and for good reason. Compact and tidy in habit, it produces dense spikes of deep violet-purple flowers above silvery-grey foliage, filling the garden with its iconic, calming fragrance from late spring through summer. A timeless classic for borders, pathways, pots, and cottage gardens, Hidcote is as beautiful as it is useful.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 💜 Deep violet-purple flower spikes — rich, intense colour and wonderfully compact habit
  • 🌿 Iconic fragrance — intensely aromatic, perfect for drying, sachets, and culinary use
  • ✂️ Excellent cut and dried flower — retains colour and fragrance beautifully when dried
  • 🐝 Outstanding pollinator plant — irresistible to bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects
  • 🏡 Compact and tidy — grows to 30–40 cm, ideal for borders, edging, and containers
  • ☀️ Drought tolerant once established — thrives in sunny, well-drained positions

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Lavender Hidcote grows best in a sunny, well-drained position — it dislikes wet feet and heavy soils. Sow seeds on the surface of a fine seed-raising mix and do not cover, as seeds need light to germinate. Keep moist and warm (18–22°C) until germination, which can take 2–4 weeks. Prick out seedlings when large enough to handle and grow on before planting out. Well suited to most NZ regions; particularly excellent in drier, sunnier areas such as Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, and Central Otago, Auckland and Northland
