Growing Tips for New Zealand

Alchemilla benefits from cold stratification before sowing to improve germination rates. Mix seeds with slightly damp seed-raising mix in a sealed bag and refrigerate for 4–6 weeks before sowing. After stratification, surface sow onto moist seed-raising mix — seeds need light to germinate so do not cover. Keep at around 15–18°C and maintain even moisture. Germination can be slow and a little variable, so patience pays off. Alternatively, sow outdoors in autumn and allow winter cold to naturally stratify the seeds. Plant out into a partially shaded to sunny position with moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Space 40–50 cm apart. Cut back hard after flowering to encourage a fresh flush of foliage.
