Growing Tips for New Zealand

Hollyhocks are best sown in late summer to autumn (February–April) for flowering the following summer, or in spring (August–October) for flowering later that season. Sow seeds directly into the garden or into trays, pressing lightly into the surface as they need light to germinate. Transplant to their final position in a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained soil. Space plants 45–60 cm apart. Water regularly until established, then hollyhocks are reasonably drought tolerant. Stake in exposed positions to protect from wind.

💡 Grower's tip: Hollyhocks are short-lived perennials that often behave as biennials — sowing a fresh batch each year ensures a continuous display. They also self-seed freely, so you may find new plants popping up year after year!
