The Most Beautiful Corn in the World

Glass Gem Corn (Zea mays) is quite simply one of the most breathtaking plants you can grow. Each cob is a jewel-like mosaic of translucent kernels in shades of pink, purple, blue, red, orange, yellow, and green — no two cobs are ever the same. Originally developed by Cherokee farmer Carl Barnes, Glass Gem is a heritage variety with a remarkable story and an even more remarkable appearance.

While primarily grown as an ornamental and for popcorn, Glass Gem is a truly special addition to any garden — and the cobs make stunning decorations, gifts, and keepsakes.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 💎 Jewel-like translucent kernels — every cob a unique work of art
  • 🌈 Rainbow of colours — pink, purple, blue, red, orange, yellow and green
  • 🌽 Heritage variety with a story — developed by Cherokee farmer Carl Barnes
  • 🍿 Makes excellent popcorn — grind into flour or pop for a colourful treat
  • 🋏️ Beautiful as decoration — dried cobs make stunning natural ornaments and gifts

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow seeds directly into the garden in spring once soil has warmed (October–November), 2–3 cm deep and 30–40 cm apart in blocks rather than rows — corn is wind-pollinated so planting in blocks ensures good pollination. Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered spot with rich, well-drained soil. Water regularly and feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser as plants establish. Glass Gem grows tall — allow 2–3 metres of height. Harvest cobs when husks are dry and papery, then allow to dry fully before storing or using.

💡 Grower's tip: Grow in blocks of at least 4 plants for best pollination and the most colourful, well-filled cobs.
