Growing Tips for New Zealand

Violas thrive in cool conditions and are one of the best flowers for autumn sowing throughout NZ. Sow seeds indoors in seed-raising mix 8–10 weeks before transplanting, or direct sow in a sheltered position from late summer into autumn. In the warmer northern regions — Northland, Auckland, and the Coromandel — violas will flower continuously right through winter, making them an outstanding choice for winter colour and edible garnishes. In cooler southern areas they will flower from autumn into early winter, then again prolifically in spring. Transplant seedlings to 20–25 cm apart in a sunny to partly shaded position with fertile, well-drained soil. Deadhead spent blooms to keep the flowers coming.
