Dark, Dramatic, and Utterly Irresistible

Daucus carota 'Chocolate Lace Flower' is one of the most dramatic and sought-after flowers in the cutting garden. A stunning ornamental relative of the wild carrot, it produces large, intricate flat-topped umbels of the deepest chocolate-burgundy, so dark they appear almost black in certain light. Each flower head is a masterpiece of fine lacy detail, with a tiny deep-coloured floret at the very centre that gives the bloom its characteristic jewel-like quality. On long, strong stems above finely cut, ferny foliage, Chocolate Lace Flower brings a moody, sophisticated depth to borders and bouquets that is simply impossible to replicate with any other plant. Once you grow it, you will wonder how you ever gardened without it.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🫖 Deep chocolate-burgundy umbels — large, intricate, and almost black in certain light, extraordinarily dramatic
  • ✂️ Exceptional cut flower — long strong stems and long vase life, a showstopper in dark and moody arrangements
  • 🌿 Finely cut ferny foliage — delicate and beautiful even before the flowers appear
  • 🐝 Excellent for pollinators — bees and beneficial insects are strongly attracted to the umbel flowers
  • 🌱 Easy to grow from seed — direct sow for best results, reliable and rewarding

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Daucus carota prefers to be direct sown as it dislikes root disturbance. Sow directly into a sunny position with well-drained soil in autumn or early spring. Scatter seeds on the surface and rake in lightly, or sow at a depth of around 5mm. Thin seedlings to 20–30 cm apart. Plants are tolerant of poor, dry soils — avoid overwatering or heavy, wet conditions. Chocolate Lace Flower is biennial in some climates but often flowers in its first year from an early sowing. Performs beautifully throughout NZ in warm, sunny positions. Cut stems when the umbels are fully open for the best vase life.
