Struck by Beauty — Cupid's Dart in Soft Lavender-Blue

Cupid's Dart Amor Blue (Catananche caerulea 'Amor Blue') is a charming and delicate perennial wildflower bearing papery, cornflower-like blooms in a soft, clear lavender-blue above fine, grassy silver-green foliage. Its common name says it all — once you grow it, you'll be completely smitten. Long-stemmed and airy, it is a wonderful cut and dried flower, and brings a light, meadow-like grace to cottage borders and wildflower gardens that is hard to replicate.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 💙 Soft lavender-blue papery blooms — delicate, cornflower-like flowers with a silvery papery texture that shimmer in the light
  • ✂️ Superb cut and dried flower — long-stemmed and elegant fresh, and retains its papery beauty when dried
  • 🌿 Fine grassy silver-green foliage — attractive even when not in flower, adding texture to the border
  • 🐝 Attracts bees and butterflies — a lovely nectar source through summer
  • 🌱 Drought tolerant perennial — once established, thrives with minimal water in well-drained soils

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed-raising mix in spring or early summer — light aids germination so do not cover deeply. Transplant seedlings to 25–30 cm apart in a sunny position with well-drained, even poor soil; Catananche dislikes rich, wet conditions and will thrive in lean, dry spots where other plants struggle. Grows to around 40–60 cm tall and flowers freely through summer. Ideal for NZ's drier regions including Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, Canterbury, and Central Otago, but performs well in any sunny, well-drained spot throughout the country.
