The Cheerful Golden Drumstick of the Cottage Garden

Craspedia globosa, affectionately known as Billy Buttons, is one of the most distinctive and joyful flowers you can grow from seed. Perfect, round golden-yellow drumstick blooms sit atop long, slender, silvery-grey stems, creating a striking architectural effect that is unlike anything else in the garden. Whether planted in drifts for a bold meadow-style display, tucked into a cottage border for a pop of sunshine, or cut and dried for long-lasting arrangements, Billy Buttons never fails to raise a smile. Native to Australia and New Zealand, this tough little beauty is perfectly at home in our climate and thrives with minimal fuss.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🌟 Perfect round golden-yellow drumstick blooms — bold, architectural, and utterly unique in the garden
  • 🌾 Excellent fresh and dried cut flower — long-lasting in a vase and dries beautifully, retaining its colour for months
  • 🦳 Striking silvery-grey foliage and stems — adds texture and contrast even before the flowers appear
  • 🌟 Native to Australia and NZ — naturally adapted to our conditions, drought-tolerant once established
  • 🐝 Attractive to bees and beneficial insects — a quiet but reliable pollinator plant
  • 🌱 Easy to grow from seed — rewarding and reliable in a sunny, well-drained position

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow indoors in late winter to early spring, pressing seeds lightly onto the surface of moist seed-raising mix — they need light to germinate, so do not cover. Keep moist and warm (18–22°C) until germination. Transplant seedlings to a sunny position with excellent drainage once frosts have passed, spacing 20–30 cm apart. Craspedia thrives in poor to average, free-draining soils and is drought-tolerant once established — avoid overwatering or heavy clay soils. Performs beautifully throughout NZ, particularly in drier regions. Cut stems when the drumstick heads are fully formed for the best dried flower results.
