Pure White Elegance, Towering Above the Garden

Cosmos bipinnatus 'White' is a timeless classic — clean, pure, and effortlessly beautiful. Growing to an impressive 1.6 metres tall by the end of summer, these statuesque plants create a breathtaking backdrop in any border, their large pristine white blooms with soft golden-yellow centres swaying gracefully above a cloud of feathery, fine-cut foliage. Whether planted en masse for a dreamy white garden effect, used to add height at the back of a border, or cut for a vase, white cosmos brings a sense of calm and elegance that few flowers can match. Simple, stunning, and utterly reliable — this is a variety every cottage gardener should grow.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • Pristine pure white blooms — large, single flowers with a soft golden-yellow centre, classic and timeless
  • 🌿 Impressive height — up to 1.6 metres tall — a stunning backdrop plant that adds drama and structure to borders
  • ✂️ Outstanding cut flower — exceptionally long elegant stems and pure white blooms that pair beautifully with any colour in an arrangement
  • 🍃 Feathery fine-cut foliage — light and airy, adding movement and texture to borders and bouquets
  • 🐝 Excellent for bees and butterflies — a magnet for pollinators throughout summer and autumn
  • 🌱 Easy to grow from seed — fast-growing, free-flowering, and self-seeds gently in the right conditions

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow in spring once soil has warmed. Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and cover lightly. Transplant seedlings to 30–45 cm apart in a sunny, open position with well-drained soil. These tall plants may benefit from light staking in exposed or windy positions. Cosmos thrives in poor to average soils — avoid overfeeding which encourages lush foliage at the expense of flowers. Deadhead regularly to extend flowering from summer right through to autumn. Performs beautifully throughout NZ in any warm, sunny position.
