Clarkia Double Mix Seeds
A Cottage Garden Gem in a Rainbow of Colours
Clarkia Double Mix (Clarkia unguiculata) is a delightful and underrated annual that deserves a place in every cottage garden and cutting garden. Slender, branching stems are studded with fully double, ruffled blooms in a gorgeous mix of pinks, salmons, lavenders, reds, and whites. Light, airy, and wonderfully free-flowering, Clarkia brings a soft, romantic charm to borders and bouquets from late spring through summer and is one of the easiest and most rewarding annuals you can grow from seed.
Why Gardeners Love It
- 🌸 Fully double ruffled blooms in a rich colour mix — pinks, salmons, lavenders, reds, and whites for a vibrant, romantic display
- ✂️ Excellent cut flower — long stems and good vase life, beautiful in mixed cottage-style bouquets
- 📏 Grows 60–90 cm tall — ideal for cutting gardens, cottage borders, and mixed beds
- 🐝 Attracts bees and butterflies — a lovely nectar source through spring and summer
- 🌱 Extremely easy to grow from seed — direct sow and largely self-sufficient, will often self-seed year after year
Growing Tips for New Zealand
Clarkia is best direct sown into its final position as it dislikes transplanting. Sow in autumn for spring flowering, or in early spring for summer blooms. Scatter seeds on the surface and rake in lightly — seeds need light to germinate so do not cover deeply. Thin to 20–25 cm apart in a sunny to lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. Clarkia thrives in cool conditions and actually prefers poor to average soils — avoid overfeeding. Performs beautifully throughout NZ, particularly in cooler regions, and will often self-seed reliably year after year.
