Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow seeds direct into the garden or into seed trays, covering lightly with seed-raising mix to about 5 mm depth. Calendula germinates readily in cool to mild conditions — ideal temperature is 15–20°C. Sow in autumn for winter and spring flowering in mild NZ regions, or in spring for summer blooms. Plant out into a sunny position with well-drained soil, spacing 20–25 cm apart. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to extend the flowering season. Calendula is wonderfully unfussy and one of the most rewarding seeds to sow with children.
