Black-Eyed Susan Seeds — Rudbeckia hirta Cherry Brandy
Deep, Velvety Cherry and Bronze — a Black-Eyed Susan Like No Other
Rudbeckia hirta 'Cherry Brandy' is a truly striking and unusual variety that takes the classic Black-Eyed Susan in a completely different direction. Instead of the familiar golden yellow, 'Cherry Brandy' produces luxurious velvety flowers in deep cherry-red, rich burgundy, and warm bronze tones — around a bold dark central cone. The effect is dramatic, bringing a depth of colour to the late summer border that is quite unlike anything else. An outstanding cut flower with exceptional vase life, it is equally at home in a relaxed cottage garden or a more formal planting scheme. Once you grow it, it becomes an annual must-have.

Growing Tips for New Zealand
Rudbeckia hirta 'Cherry Brandy' can be sown direct where it is to flower, or started in trays in late winter or early spring for earlier blooms. Surface sow onto moist seed-raising mix and cover very lightly, as seeds need light to germinate. Transplant or thin seedlings to 30–45cm apart. Rudbeckia hirta thrives in a sunny position with well-drained soil and is quite drought tolerant once established. It performs well across most NZ regions. Although technically a tender perennial, it is most reliably grown as an annual in NZ — it will often self-seed and return in warmer gardens. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering, or leave seed heads for birds and self-seeding.
