Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow seeds direct into the garden after the last frost, or start indoors 6–8 weeks before planting out. Press seeds lightly onto the surface of moist seed-raising mix — Xeranthemum benefits from light to germinate so cover only very lightly. Ideal germination temperature is 18–22°C. Plant out into a sunny, open position with well-drained soil, spacing 25–30 cm apart. Xeranthemum thrives in hot, dry conditions and dislikes heavy or waterlogged soils. For drying, cut stems when flowers are just fully open and hang upside down in small bunches in a warm, airy spot. The colours hold beautifully for months to years.
