Sacred, Aromatic, and Genuinely Rare — a Plant Worth the Challenge

Salvia apiana, White Sage, is one of the most revered and distinctive plants of the American Southwest — a large, shrubby perennial with striking silvery-white foliage and tall wands of small white to pale lavender flowers that rise dramatically above the plant in summer. Every part of the plant is intensely aromatic, releasing a powerful, clean, resinous fragrance when touched that is quite unlike any other sage. Sacred to many Indigenous cultures and widely used in smudging and ceremonial practices, White Sage is also a beautiful and architecturally striking garden plant in its own right — one that rewards patient, experienced growers with something truly special.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • Intensely aromatic silvery foliage — the large, woolly white-grey leaves release a powerful, clean, resinous fragrance; one of the most distinctive scents in the plant world
  • 🌿 Striking architectural presence — the silvery mounding foliage and tall flower wands create a bold, dramatic effect in the garden
  • 🐝 Excellent for pollinators — the flowers attract bees, butterflies, moths, and other beneficial insects throughout the flowering season
  • 🌱 Drought tolerant once established — a plant of hot, dry, well-drained conditions; thrives with minimal water once settled in
  • 🌼 Tall flower wands — slender spires of small white to pale lavender flowers rise well above the foliage in summer, adding height and movement
  • 🌟 Genuinely rare in NZ — difficult to source as a plant; growing from seed is the most reliable way to obtain this remarkable species

A Note on Germination

We want to be upfront: Salvia apiana is notoriously difficult to germinate and is rated as an advanced sowing challenge. Germination rates are typically low and unpredictable even under ideal conditions — this is the nature of the species, not a reflection of seed quality. To give your seeds the best chance, cold stratify before sowing: place seeds in a damp paper towel in the fridge for 4–6 weeks. Sow onto the surface of well-drained, gritty seed-raising mix and do not cover — seeds need light to germinate. Keep warm (20–25°C) and do not overwater. Germination may take 3–8 weeks or longer, and some seeds may not germinate at all. Patience and persistence are essential. We include 25 seeds per packet to give you the best possible chance of success.

Growing Tips for New Zealand

White Sage requires a hot, sunny, very well-drained position — it will not tolerate wet or humid conditions and is best suited to drier NZ regions or raised beds with excellent drainage. Once established it is highly drought tolerant and requires very little water or fertiliser. Avoid overhead watering and ensure good air circulation around the plant. In wetter NZ climates, growing in a pot with gritty, free-draining mix and overwintering under cover is recommended. A genuinely rewarding plant for the experienced and patient gardener.

What's in the Packet

Each packet contains 25 seeds of White Sage (Salvia apiana), with growing instructions included. A generous count to account for the characteristically low and variable germination rate of this species.
