The White Beauty of Delphinium

White Delphinium (Delphinium × cultorum) produces tall spires of white flowers with soft, pale centres above deeply lobed green foliage. A beautiful choice for cottage gardens, sunny borders, and cutting patches, these elegant flowers bring height and a fresh white accent to summer planting.

Imagine those graceful white spikes rising above your border, then bringing a few indoors for a generous summer bouquet. It is a lovely choice for gardeners and flower growers who enjoy tall, classic cottage-garden flowers.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🤍 White-on-white flowers — beautiful white blooms with light centres for a fresh, classic look
  • ✂️ Lovely cut flowers — tall flower spikes add height and structure to arrangements
  • 🌿 Cottage garden favourite — a striking backdrop for lower-growing flowers
  • 🌼 Herbaceous perennial — seasonal growth and summer flowering, with plants dying back over winter
  • 🦋 Pollinator-friendly blooms — a welcome addition to a flower-filled garden
  • 🌱 Moderate to grow — rewarding with attentive sowing and seedling care

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow undercover in late winter or spring, or in autumn where conditions allow seedlings to establish before winter. Use a fine, free-draining seed-raising mix, cover seeds lightly, and keep evenly moist rather than wet. Cool conditions suit germination; avoid hot windowsills. Germination often takes around 2–4 weeks but can be variable.

Transplant established seedlings into a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil, allowing approximately 45–60 cm between plants. Protect young growth from slugs and snails. Water during dry weather and stake the tall stems early, particularly in exposed gardens.

For cut flowers, harvest when the lower flowers on the spike have opened and the upper buds are still developing. Place stems into clean water promptly. Removing spent flower spikes can encourage further flowering when growing conditions are favourable.

⚠️ Delphiniums are harmful if eaten. Keep seeds and plants away from children and pets, and do not use the flowers as edible decorations.
