Silverbeet Rainbow Lights Swiss Chard Seeds — Beta vulgaris
A Rainbow in Your Garden
Silverbeet Rainbow Lights Swiss Chard (Beta vulgaris) is one of the most visually spectacular vegetables you can grow — a mix of stems in vivid red, orange, yellow, pink, and white, topped with glossy dark green leaves. As beautiful as any ornamental plant, Rainbow Lights is equally at home in a flower border as it is in the vegetable patch. And it tastes just as good as it looks — mild, earthy, and tender, with young leaves perfect for salads and mature leaves wonderful sautéed, steamed, or added to soups and frittatas.
Why Gardeners Love It
- 🌈 Stunning multicoloured stems — red, orange, yellow, pink, and white in every packet
- 🌱 Ornamental and edible — beautiful enough for a flower border
- ✂️ Cut-and-come-again — harvest outer leaves regularly for months of picking
- ❄️ Frost tolerant — keeps producing through mild NZ winters
- 🥗 Incredibly versatile — raw in salads, sautéed, steamed, or in soups and frittatas
Growing Tips for New Zealand
Silverbeet is one of the easiest and most rewarding vegetables to grow in New Zealand. Sow direct or into trays year-round in most NZ regions, though spring and autumn are ideal. Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep, thinning to 30–40 cm apart. Prefers a sunny position in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly and feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser to encourage lush, colourful growth. Harvest outer leaves from the base as needed — the plant will keep producing new growth from the centre.
💡 Grower's tip: The more you pick, the more it grows! Regular harvesting keeps plants productive and prevents them from bolting.
