Silver Salentino Seeds — Eryngium planum
Luminous Silver-Blue Blooms for the Cottage Border
Silver Salentino (Eryngium planum) is a refined selection of sea holly producing an abundance of small, luminous silver-blue flower heads surrounded by elegant, spiky silver bracts. More intensely silver than the species, it creates a breathtaking metallic shimmer in the summer border and is equally stunning in fresh or dried arrangements. A long-lived perennial that rewards patience with years of beauty.
Why Gardeners Love It
- ✨ Intensely silver-blue blooms — more luminous and metallic than standard Eryngium
- 🐝 Pollinator magnet — bees and butterflies love the nectar-rich flowers
- 🌾 Superb dried flower — retains its silver colour and form beautifully when dried
- ✂️ Excellent cut flower — adds dramatic texture to fresh and dried arrangements
- ☀️ Drought tolerant once established — thrives in dry, sunny conditions
- 🌿 Long-lived perennial — returns year after year with increasing presence
Growing Tips for New Zealand
Sow in autumn or early spring. Seeds benefit from cold stratification — refrigerate damp seeds for 4 weeks before sowing to improve germination. Eryngium prefers a sunny position with well-drained, even poor soil. Avoid overwatering and heavy clay soils. Plants flower from their second year. Excellent for Canterbury, Hawke's Bay, Nelson, and other drier NZ regions.
