The Queen of the Cottage Garden

Chater's Double is the most celebrated hollyhock of all — a Victorian heirloom variety renowned for its extraordinarily full, ruffled blooms that resemble giant peonies. This salmon form is simply breathtaking: warm, peachy-pink flowers packed with layer upon layer of silky petals, stacked up tall spires that bring old-world romance to any garden.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🌸 Fully double peony-like blooms — lush, ruffled flowers in a warm peachy-salmon pink
  • 📏 Grows 150–200 cm tall — a magnificent statement at the back of borders or against walls
  • 🌟 Heirloom variety — a Victorian classic that has graced cottage gardens for over 150 years
  • 🐝 Loved by pollinators — bees are drawn to these generous blooms
  • ✂️ Exceptional cut flower — dramatic and long-lasting in large arrangements
  • 🌱 Easy to grow — self-seeds freely once established for years of colour

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow seeds in spring or early summer into well-drained soil or seed-raising mix. Hollyhocks prefer a sunny, sheltered position — against a warm wall or fence is ideal. Transplant seedlings to their final position in autumn, spacing 45–60 cm apart. They will establish over winter and flower the following summer. Allow a few plants to self-seed for a naturalistic cottage garden effect.
