Quaking Grass Seeds – Briza maxima
Movement and Magic in the Garden
Quaking Grass (Briza maxima) is one of the most enchanting ornamental grasses you can grow. Its distinctive, heart-shaped spikelets dangle from delicate arching stems and tremble and shimmer at the slightest breeze — hence the name. Whether swaying in the garden border, nodding in a wildflower meadow, or dried and arranged in a vase, Quaking Grass brings an effortless, airy grace that few other plants can match.
Why Gardeners Love It
- 🌾 Unique dangling spikelets — heart-shaped and papery, trembling beautifully in even the lightest breeze
- ✂️ Superb cut and dried grass — harvest before fully ripe for fresh arrangements, or dry naturally for long-lasting displays
- 🌿 Wonderful filler plant — adds movement and texture between flowering plants in borders and cottage beds
- 🌱 Fast and easy from seed — direct sow and establish quickly; self-seeds gently for repeat displays
- 🌺 Perfect for wildflower and meadow gardens — naturalises beautifully in informal plantings
Growing Tips for New Zealand
Sow directly into a sunny position with well-drained soil in autumn or early spring. Quaking Grass prefers a lean soil — avoid over-fertilising, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of those beautiful spikelets. Thin seedlings to 20–25 cm apart. It grows to around 50–70 cm tall and is at its most spectacular in late spring and early summer when the spikelets are fully formed. Harvest stems for drying just as the spikelets begin to open for the best results. Grows well throughout NZ in any sunny, reasonably drained spot.
