A Soft and Romantic Twist on a Garden Classic

Pink Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) brings a fresh, romantic charm to the cottage garden with its delicate, fringed blooms in soft clear pink. All the easy-going, free-flowering character of the classic cornflower, but in a colour that pairs beautifully with whites, mauves, and blues for a dreamy, meadow-inspired planting. Long wiry stems make it just as at home in a vase as in the border, and its generous flowering habit ensures a continuous display from spring through summer.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🌸 Soft clear pink fringed blooms — romantic and charming, a lovely alternative to the classic blue
  • ✂️ Excellent cut flower — long wiry stems and good vase life, beautiful in mixed cottage-style bouquets
  • 📏 Grows 70–90 cm tall — ideal for cutting gardens, cottage borders, and wildflower meadow mixes
  • 🐝 Outstanding for bees and butterflies — one of the best annual nectar plants for pollinators
  • 🌱 Extremely easy to grow from seed — direct sow and largely self-sufficient, will often self-seed year after year

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Cornflowers are best direct sown into their final position as they dislike transplanting. Sow in autumn for spring flowering, or in early spring for summer blooms. Sow seeds 1 cm deep in a sunny, well-drained position and thin to 30 cm apart. Cornflowers thrive in average to poor soils and need little feeding. Deadhead regularly to extend flowering. Performs beautifully throughout NZ in any sunny, open position.
