Cream Blooms with a Dramatic Colour-Changing Secret

Orchid Cream (Tropaeolum majus 'Orchid Cream') is a nasturtium with a fascinating trick up its sleeve. The flowers open as soft creamy-white with bold, deep raspberry-red markings radiating from the centre — striking and beautiful in their own right. But the real magic happens as the flowers age: gradually, the whole flower deepens to match those vivid central markings, transforming into a warm raspberry-red. The result is a plant that puts on an ever-changing display, with flowers at every stage of this beautiful colour journey all at once.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🌸 Stunning colour transformation — opens creamy-white with bold raspberry-red centre markings, then ages to raspberry-red
  • 🌱 Edible flowers and leaves — both have a peppery flavour, wonderful in salads and as a colourful garnish
  • 🐝 Excellent pollinator plant — a magnet for bees and butterflies throughout summer
  • 🌿 Easy to sow — large seeds are simple to handle and germinate quickly and reliably
  • 🎨 Ever-changing display — flowers at every stage of the colour journey on the plant at once, always something to admire
  • 🩴 Compact mounding habit — bushy and tidy, ideal for pots, borders, and hanging baskets

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Nasturtiums are one of the easiest plants to grow from seed. Sow direct into the garden after the last frost, or start in small pots and transplant. They prefer a sunny position and actually perform best in poor to average soil — too rich a soil produces lush foliage at the expense of flowers. Water regularly but allow to dry between waterings. Orchid Cream will flower prolifically from early summer through to autumn, and the more you pick the flowers, the more they produce. Seeds can be saved at the end of the season for next year.
