The Darkest, Most Dramatic Nasturtium You Can Grow

Black Velvet (Tropaeolum majus 'Black Velvet') is quite simply one of the most dramatic annual flowers available — a nasturtium like no other. Its flowers are an extraordinary deep burgundy-black, so dark they appear almost black in certain light, with a rich velvety texture that catches the eye from across the garden. Set against the classic bright green round nasturtium leaves, the effect is bold, sophisticated, and utterly striking. A must-have for dark flower enthusiasts and anyone who loves a bit of drama in the garden.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • Extraordinary near-black flowers — deep burgundy-black blooms with a rich velvety sheen, unlike any other nasturtium
  • 🌱 Edible flowers and leaves — both have a peppery flavour, wonderful in salads and as a striking garnish
  • 🐝 Excellent pollinator plant — a magnet for bees and butterflies throughout summer
  • 🌿 Easy to sow — large seeds are simple to handle and germinate quickly and reliably
  • 🎨 Stunning in dark-themed borders — pairs beautifully with silver foliage, pale flowers, or other dark-leaved plants
  • 📸 Highly photogenic — the contrast of near-black flowers against bright green leaves is simply spectacular

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Nasturtiums are one of the easiest plants to grow from seed. Sow direct into the garden after the last frost, or start in small pots and transplant. They prefer a sunny position and actually perform best in poor to average soil — too rich a soil produces lush foliage at the expense of flowers. Water regularly but allow to dry between waterings. Black Velvet will flower prolifically from early summer through to autumn, and the more you pick the flowers, the more they produce. Seeds can be saved at the end of the season for next year.
