Nasturtium Day and Night Seeds — Tropaeolum majus
The Nasturtium of Contrasts
Day and Night (Tropaeolum majus) is one of the most dramatic and eye-catching nasturtium varieties you can grow — a stunning mix of the deepest, richest near-black mahogany blooms alongside the brightest, most vivid creamy-yellow flowers, all tumbling together in a glorious cottage garden display. The contrast is bold, beautiful, and completely irresistible. Easy to grow, edible, and loved by pollinators, this is a variety that earns its place in every garden.
Why Gardeners Love It
- 🌝 Dramatic day and night contrast — deep near-black mahogany and bright creamy-yellow blooms together in one mix
- 🌿 Edible flowers and leaves — peppery nasturtium blooms and foliage are delicious in salads and as garnishes
- 🐝 Pollinator magnet — bees and butterflies flock to the open, nectar-rich blooms
- ☀️ Easy to grow — direct sow and largely leave alone; one of the most beginner-friendly seeds you can grow
- 🌼 Prolific and long-flowering — blooms from early summer right through to the first frosts
- 🦪 Natural pest deterrent — nasturtiums are a classic companion plant, drawing aphids away from vegetables
Growing Tips for New Zealand
Direct sow from September onwards once the soil has warmed or start indoors in August for an earlier display. Nasturtiums prefer poor to average soil — too rich and you'll get more leaves than flowers. Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep, 20–30 cm apart, in a sunny to partly shaded position. Water in and largely leave them to it — they thrive on a little neglect. Day and Night can be grown as a trailing or climbing variety; give it something to scramble up for a spectacular vertical display. Self-seeds freely in warmer NZ regions.
