Kuroda Improved carrots (Daucus carota) produce rich orange roots with broad shoulders and a gently tapering shape. Sweet and crisp, they’re a lovely all-round choice for the vege garden, ready to enjoy raw, roasted, steamed, or stirred into everyday family meals.

These are seeds we’ve collected ourselves, packed generously for gardeners who enjoy growing plenty for the kitchen. Pull a fresh bunch, wash them off, and enjoy that satisfying journey from garden bed to chopping board.

Why Gardeners Love Them

  • πŸ₯• Substantial orange roots β€” broad-shouldered carrots with a tapered shape
  • 🍽️ Sweet and versatile β€” enjoy fresh crunch or cook until tender
  • β˜€οΈ Suited to warm-season growing β€” a useful choice for spring and summer sowings
  • 🌱 Generous packet β€” approximately 1,000 seeds for successive sowings
  • 🌿 Direct-sown crop β€” grow where you sow, without transplanting
  • πŸ’§ Worth a little care β€” steady moisture during germination helps seedlings get started

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow directly into a sunny position from spring through late summer, extending into early autumn in milder regions. Prepare a fine, loose, well-drained seedbed and remove stones so roots have room to develop. Avoid freshly manured soil, which can encourage forked roots.

Sow thinly, approximately 5 mm deep, in rows about 20–30 cm apart. Keep the surface consistently moist until seedlings emerge. Germination usually takes around 10–21 days, depending on soil temperature and conditions. Do not let the seedbed dry out or form a hard crust.

Thin seedlings to approximately 5–8 cm apart to allow the broad roots to develop. Water evenly and keep weeds down while plants are young. Sow smaller batches every few weeks during suitable weather for a longer harvest.

Harvest young for smaller, tender carrots, or let roots reach your preferred size. Timing varies with season and growing conditions, so check a few roots rather than judging by the leafy tops alone. Loosen the soil gently before lifting to avoid snapping them.
