Green Okra Seeds — Abelmoschus esculentus
A Tropical Favourite for the Warm-Season Garden
Green Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is a striking and productive warm-season vegetable that brings a touch of the tropics to the kitchen garden. Tall, architectural plants produce beautiful hibiscus-like flowers followed by tender green pods that are best harvested young. A staple in cuisines around the world — from Southern American to Indian and African cooking — okra is wonderfully versatile: roasted, stir-fried, pickled, or added to soups and stews where it acts as a natural thickener. Once you grow it, you'll wonder why you waited.

Growing Tips for New Zealand
Okra loves heat — it's best suited to warm regions of New Zealand (Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, Nelson) but can be grown successfully further south with a warm, sheltered spot. Start seeds indoors in September–October, or sow direct from November once soil temperatures are consistently above 20°C. Soak seeds overnight before sowing to improve germination. Plant out 40–60 cm apart in full sun. Water regularly once established and feed with a balanced fertiliser through the growing season. Harvest pods when 7–10 cm long — every 2–3 days — to keep plants producing. Pods left too long become tough and fibrous.
