A Beloved Cottage Garden Classic — Cheerful White Daisy Flowers with a Golden Centre

Matricaria (Feverfew) is one of the most enduring and beloved cottage garden plants — a true classic that has graced gardens for centuries and shows no sign of going out of fashion. Growing to around 60cm tall, it produces a profusion of cheerful single daisy-like flowers with crisp white petals and a bright golden-yellow centre on branching stems above broad, lobed, bright green aromatic foliage. Feverfew is a generous and prolific plant — once established it flowers freely over a long season, self-seeds happily around the garden, and asks for very little in return. It is equally at home in the border, the cutting garden, or a relaxed wildflower-style planting, and its airy stems and classic daisy flowers make it a natural and versatile addition to posies and cottage arrangements. A garden staple that every gardener should grow.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🌼 Classic single daisy flowers — crisp white petrefrsh, same als surrounding a bright golden-yellow centre; the quintessential cottage garden flower, cheerful and timeless in equal measure
  • ✂️ Wonderful cut flower — airy branching stems and long-lasting blooms make feverfew a natural filler and feature flower for cottage posies and arrangements
  • 🌿 Prolific and long-flowering — flowers freely over a long season; the more you cut, the more it blooms
  • 🌱 Broad, lobed aromatic foliage — attractive bright green leaves with a distinctive aromatic scent; a traditional herbal plant with a long history of use
  • 🌿 Self-seeds freely — once established, feverfew will self-seed gently and reliably around the garden, returning year after year with little effort
  • 🐝 Loved by pollinators — bees and beneficial insects flock to the flowers throughout the season
  • 🌱 Easy to grow — grows to 60cm — vigorous, reliable, and unfussy; well-suited to borders, cutting gardens, and cottage gardens across NZ

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow Matricaria in trays in late winter to spring onto moist seed-raising mix; press seeds lightly onto the surface as they need light to germinate. Transplant seedlings to 30cm apart in a sunny to partly shaded position with well-drained soil. Feverfew is a reliable and adaptable performer across most NZ regions and will self-seed freely once established — allow a few plants to set seed each season to ensure a continuing supply. Deadhead or cut regularly to encourage continued flowering. Plants often overwinter in mild NZ climates, returning reliably the following season.
