Cleome Spinosa Mix Seeds
Tall, Tropical, and Utterly Spectacular
Cleome Spinosa Mix (Cleome spinosa), also known as Spider Flower, is one of the most dramatic and eye-catching annuals you can grow from seed. Towering stems topped with large, airy flower heads in a mix of light pink, hot pink, and white create a bold, tropical effect that transforms any border into something truly spectacular. The spidery, long-stamened blooms are endlessly fascinating up close, and the plant's sheer height and presence make it a natural focal point in the summer garden. Self-seeds freely, so once you grow it, it tends to return year after year.
Why Gardeners Love It
- 🌸 Large airy flower heads in light pink, hot pink, and white — bold, tropical, and utterly eye-catching in the border
- 📏 Grows 90–150 cm tall — a dramatic back-of-border statement plant that commands attention
- 🐝 Outstanding for bees and butterflies — a magnet for pollinators throughout summer
- 🌱 Self-seeds freely — once established, will return reliably year after year with minimal effort
- ☀️ Heat and drought tolerant — thrives in warm, sunny conditions with minimal fuss once established
Growing Tips for New Zealand
Sow seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow in spring once soil has thoroughly warmed — Cleome loves heat and will be slow in cold conditions. Chill seeds in the fridge for a few days before sowing to improve germination. Sow on the surface of moist seed-raising mix as light aids germination. Transplant seedlings to 45–60 cm apart in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Water regularly until established, then drought tolerant. Performs best in NZ's warmer regions but will thrive in any sunny, warm summer position throughout the country.
