Chocolate Cosmos Seeds — Cosmos atrosanguineus
The Rarest Chocolate in the Garden
There is nothing quite like Chocolate Cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus) — a plant so extraordinary it almost defies belief. Deep, velvety burgundy-brown flowers with a warm, unmistakable chocolate fragrance that drifts through the garden on a warm summer evening. Growing to around 30 cm in bloom, it's a compact and elegant plant that fits beautifully into borders, pots, and cottage garden arrangements. A tender perennial native to Mexico, Chocolate Cosmos is notoriously difficult to set seed — most plants are sterile — making viable seed genuinely rare and precious. These seeds have been carefully home-harvested and tested from our own plants, making each packet a true collector's find.

Growing Tips for New Zealand
Sow indoors in early spring (Sep-Nov) in seed-raising mix, pressing seeds lightly onto the surface — they need light to germinate. Keep warm (18–22°C) and moist. Expect germination in 10–14 days. Germination can be variable — patience is rewarded. Transplant seedlings to a warm, sheltered, sunny position with well-drained soil once all frost risk has passed. Chocolate Cosmos is frost-tender, so in cooler NZ regions treat as an annual or lift and overwinter tubers indoors. In frost-free areas it may return as a perennial. Water regularly during dry spells and deadhead to prolong flowering.
💡 Grower's note: These seeds have been home-harvested from our own plants — a rare opportunity as Chocolate Cosmos very seldom sets viable seed. Germination rates may vary; sow all seeds for the best results.
What's in the Packet
Each packet contains 5 seeds of Chocolate Cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus). Due to the rarity of viable seed, quantities are very limited.
