Flamingo Feather Flower Seeds — Celosia spicata
Elegant Spires of Pink and Silver
Celosia Flamingo Flower (Celosia spicata) is a sophisticated and graceful annual bearing slender, wheat-like spires of soft pink fading to silvery-white — a far more refined and elegant form than the more common crested celosias. Its tall, airy stems and delicate feathery plumes bring a light, meadow-like quality to the cutting garden and border, and it is one of the most sought-after flowers for both fresh and dried arrangements. Once you discover it, it becomes an indispensable part of the summer garden.
Why Gardeners Love It
- 🌸 Slender wheat-like spires in soft pink and silver — elegant and refined, a world away from the bolder crested celosias
- ✂️ Outstanding cut and dried flower — long-stemmed and beautiful fresh, and dries to a lasting silvery-pink perfection
- 📏 Grows 60–90 cm tall — ideal for cutting gardens, mixed borders, and cottage-style beds
- 🐝 Attracts bees and butterflies — a lovely nectar source through the summer months
- 🌱 Easy to grow from seed — fast-growing and rewarding in warm summer conditions
Growing Tips for New Zealand
Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow in spring once soil has thoroughly warmed — Celosia loves heat and will sulk in cold conditions. Sow on the surface of moist seed-raising mix as light aids germination. Transplant seedlings to 25–30 cm apart in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging. Performs best in NZ's warmer regions including Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, and Nelson, but will thrive anywhere with a warm, sunny summer.
