Fresh Bunching Onions for Everyday Cooking

Bunching Onions (Allium fistulosum) produce slender white stems and fresh green tops with a lovely onion flavour. Unlike bulb onions, theyโ€™re grown for their stems and leaves, making them a useful choice for salads, stir-fries, soups, and a freshly chopped finishing touch.

These are seeds weโ€™ve collected ourselves, ready for gardeners who enjoy having everyday ingredients close at hand. Pull a few young stems for dinner, or leave an established clump to develop and divide for future picking.

Why Gardeners Love Them

  • ๐ŸŒฟ White stems and green tops โ€” both useful in the kitchen
  • ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Versatile onion flavour โ€” lovely in salads, noodles, omelettes, and stir-fries
  • ๐Ÿชด Suitable for beds and containers โ€” handy for smaller growing spaces
  • ๐ŸŒฑ Clump-forming perennial โ€” can be kept growing and divided once established
  • โœ‚๏ธ Harvest to suit you โ€” pull young stems or pick a few outer leaves
  • โ˜€๏ธ Easy to grow โ€” a rewarding addition to the home vege garden

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow in spring or autumn, with a longer sowing season in milder areas. Choose a sunny position with fertile, free-draining soil. Avoid waterlogged ground, particularly over winter.

Sow approximately 5โ€“10 mm deep, either directly into prepared soil or into seed trays for transplanting while young. Keep evenly moist during germination, which usually takes around 7โ€“21 days, depending on conditions.

Thin or transplant seedlings to approximately 3โ€“5 cm apart for young spring-onion-style harvests, or allow around 10โ€“15 cm for plants that will remain as established clumps. Keep weeds down and water during dry weather.

Harvest young stems once they reach a useful kitchen size. For plants you wish to keep growing, pick a few outer leaves without damaging the central growing point. Established clumps can be lifted and divided, then replanted with space to develop. Sow small batches during suitable conditions for a regular supply.
