The Poppy That Looks Like It Was Spun from Silk

Bridal Silk Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is one of those flowers that stops you in your tracks. Each bloom is a fully double, ruffled cloud of pure white petals with the most delicate, tissue-paper texture — and right at the centre, a soft ring of buttery yellow anthers that makes the whole thing glow. Rising on tall, slender stems that sway gently in the breeze, this is a poppy that brings an almost bridal elegance to the cottage garden. Gorgeous in the border, breathtaking in a vase.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🤍 Pure white double blooms — fully ruffled, silky petals with soft yellow anthers at the centre; one of the most romantic poppies you can grow
  • ✂️ Beautiful cut flower — pick in bud for the longest vase life and watch them open indoors into something magical
  • 🌿 Tall and graceful — slender stems to 40–60 cm that sway beautifully in the breeze
  • 🐝 Loved by pollinators — bees are drawn to the open blooms throughout the season
  • 🌱 Self-seeds freely — once it's happy, it'll return year after year with almost no effort from you
  • 🌸 Easy to grow — direct sow onto the surface and let nature do the rest; perfect for all levels of gardener

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Bridal Silk is one of the easiest poppies to grow — the main trick is not to cover the seeds. Scatter them onto the surface of moist, well-drained soil and press gently — they need light to germinate. Expect germination in 7–14 days in cool conditions. Sow in autumn or early spring in most NZ regions for late spring to early summer flowering. Thin seedlings to 15–20 cm apart and choose a sunny spot. Once established, this poppy self-seeds gently around the garden, returning reliably each year.

The cut flower tip: Pick Bridal Silk in bud — just as the first petals are beginning to unfurl — and sear the stem ends in boiling water for 10 seconds before placing in a vase. This seals the stem and gives you the longest possible vase life. Worth the extra step, we promise!
