The Classic Kitchen Garden Bean

Blue Lake Bush Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is one of the most trusted and widely grown beans in the home garden — and for very good reason. Compact and self-supporting, it produces an abundant crop of long, straight, stringless green beans with a tender texture and clean, fresh flavour. No staking, no climbing frame needed — just sow, water, and harvest. A wonderful choice for smaller gardens, raised beds, and anyone who wants a reliable, no-fuss bean crop.

How It Differs from Our Other Beans

  • 🌿 Bush habit — compact and self-supporting, grows to around 50–60 cm. No staking or trellis required. Ideal for smaller spaces and raised beds.
  • 🌾 Blue Lake Bush is compact and freestanding — a better choice if you're short on vertical space.
  • ✂️ Stringless pods — tender, stringless beans that are ready to eat straight from the garden with no prep fuss.
  • 🌸 White flowers — pretty white blooms before the pods set, adding a delicate charm to the vege patch.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🫘 Prolific and productive — generous crops of long, straight, stringless pods over an extended harvest season
  • 🌿 Compact and self-supporting — no staking needed; perfect for raised beds, smaller gardens, and containers
  • 🍽️ Excellent flavour — tender, stringless pods with a clean fresh taste; delicious raw, steamed, or stir-fried
  • ☀️ Easy to grow — direct sow and largely leave to it; one of the most rewarding vegetables you can grow
  • ✂️ Pick and it keeps producing — regular harvesting encourages continuous cropping right through summer

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow direct from October onwards once the soil has warmed to at least 16°C. Sow seeds 3–4 cm deep, 10–15 cm apart, in rows 40–50 cm apart. Blue Lake Bush Bean is self-supporting so no staking is needed. Water regularly, especially once flowering begins, and keep picking to encourage continuous cropping. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues. Performs beautifully in all regions of New Zealand through the summer months.
