A Fragrant Favourite for Bees & Butterflies

Blue Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) is a wonderfully aromatic perennial herb that earns its place in any cottage or pollinator garden. Tall spikes of soft violet-blue flowers rise above anise-scented foliage from midsummer through to autumn, creating a haze of colour that bees and butterflies simply cannot resist. Beautiful, fragrant, and incredibly easy to grow.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 💜 Stunning violet-blue flower spikes — tall, elegant blooms from midsummer to autumn
  • 🐝 Exceptional for pollinators — one of the best plants for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies
  • 🌿 Wonderfully aromatic — anise-scented foliage that smells beautiful when brushed
  • ✂️ Great cut flower — long-lasting spikes add height and colour to arrangements
  • 🌱 Easy to grow — drought-tolerant once established; thrives in poor to average soils
  • 🌾 Edible & herbal uses — leaves and flowers are edible with a pleasant anise flavour

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed-raising mix in spring — do not cover deeply as light aids germination. Transplant seedlings to a sunny, well-drained position once large enough to handle, spacing 30–45 cm apart. Blue Hyssop thrives in full sun and tolerates dry conditions well once established. Cut back after flowering to encourage a second flush and prevent excessive self-seeding. A short-lived perennial that self-seeds freely in warm NZ gardens.
