Growing Tips for New Zealand

Sow directly into a sunny, well-drained position in spring, or in autumn in milder areas. Sow shallowly and keep the soil gently moist during germination, which usually takes around 7–14 days, depending on conditions.

Thin seedlings to approximately 20–30 cm apart to give plants room to branch. Cornflowers prefer being sown where they will grow, but can also be started in individual cells and transplanted gently while young. Tall plants may benefit from support in exposed gardens.

Harvest stems when the flowers have just opened for fresh arrangements. Regular picking and deadheading help encourage further flowering. Allow a few flower heads to mature if you would like to collect seed, although flowers may cross with other cornflower colours growing nearby.
