Cantaloupe Melon Seeds โ Cucumis melo
Sweet Orange Melons with Beautifully Textured Skin
Melon (Cucumis melo) is a cantaloupe-type melon with beautifully textured, netted skin and sweet, fragrant orange flesh. Thereโs something special about cutting into a melon youโve grown yourself, ready to enjoy in fresh wedges, fruit salads, or chilled on a warm afternoon.
These warm-season annual vines need sunshine, space, and a long enough warm spell to ripen their fruit. Give them your warmest sheltered growing spot, or grow under cover where summers are cooler or shorter.

Growing Tips for New Zealand
Sow under cover in spring with warmth, allowing approximately 3โ4 weeks before planting out after the last frost. Direct sowing in late spring may suit warmer districts once the soil is thoroughly warm. Melons dislike cold nights and cold, wet soil.
Sow approximately 1โ2 cm deep in individual pots of seed-raising mix. Keep moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes around 5โ10 days at approximately 22โ28ยฐC. Harden off young plants gradually and transplant gently without disturbing their roots.
Choose full sun and fertile, free-draining soil enriched with compost. Allow approximately 90โ120 cm between plants if vines will trail. In cooler regions, a greenhouse or tunnel can provide the extra warmth needed for reliable ripening. Ventilate on warm days and allow pollinating insects access, or hand-pollinate flowers if needed.
Water consistently at soil level during establishment, flowering, and fruit growth. Mulch to help retain moisture, keeping mulch clear of stems. Feed as needed with a suitable fruiting-vegetable fertiliser. Keep developing melons off damp soil with a dry support; if growing vertically, support each heavy fruit with a sling.
Allow fruit to ripen on the vine. Look for a stronger sweet fragrance, a change in the background rind colour from green towards tan, and the stalk beginning to separate readily from the fruit. Use several signs together rather than relying on size alone. Harvest before autumn frosts.
