Named for the vast, sun-baked landscapes it evokes, 'Sahara' produces a breathtaking range of warm, earthy tones — from creamy ivory and soft lemon through golden yellow, terracotta, russet, and deep mahogany — often with beautiful zoning, banding, and bicolour effects that make each flower utterly unique. The blooms are large and showy, carried on strong stems above lush green foliage, and they glow with a warmth and richness that is simply unmatched in the late summer garden. An outstanding cut flower and a showstopper in any border.

Why Gardeners Love It

🌸 Extraordinary colour range — creamy ivory, lemon, gold, terracotta, russet and mahogany, often with stunning bicolour zoning and banding; every flower is unique

✂️ Outstanding cut flower — large, showy blooms on strong stems with excellent vase life; a real statement in fresh arrangements

🐝 Excellent for pollinators — bees and butterflies are drawn to the flowers throughout the late season

🌱 Easy to sow — direct sow or start in trays; one of the most rewarding and reliable plants for the cutting garden and border

🌿 Long flowering season — blooms prolifically from mid-summer through to autumn, providing weeks of warm colour and cut flowers

🎨 Naturalistic effect — the mix of tones and patterns creates a rich, sun-drenched tapestry that is stunning en masse or as individual blooms

Growing Tips for New Zealand

Rudbeckia hirta 'Sahara' can be sown direct where it is to flower, or started in trays in late winter or early spring for earlier blooms. Surface sow onto moist seed-raising mix and cover very lightly, as seeds need light to germinate. Transplant or thin seedlings to 30–45cm apart. Rudbeckia hirta thrives in a sunny position with well-drained soil and is quite drought tolerant once established. It performs well across most NZ regions. Although technically a tender perennial, it is most reliably grown as an annual in NZ — it will often self-seed and return in warmer gardens. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering, or leave seed heads for birds and self-seeding.

What's in the Packet

Each packet contains 8 seeds of Black-Eyed Susan Sahara (Rudbeckia hirta 'Sahara'), with growing instructions included.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0734/2974/5733/files/image_b8c1627f-6bb0-4163-99f3-aa1729561a33.png?v=1780708824
