Scatter seeds thinly on the surface of well-prepared, free-draining soil and press in lightly; do not cover deeply as seeds need light to germinate. However, with smaller packet sizes, \u003cstrong\u003estarting in trays is also a great option and our preferred method\u003c\/strong\u003e — sow onto the surface of moist seed-raising mix, keep in a cool bright spot, then prick out carefully once seedlings are large enough to handle. This way none of those precious seeds get lost in the soil! Sow in autumn (March–May) for spring blooms, or in early spring (August–September) once the worst frosts have passed. Thin or transplant to 20–30 cm apart. Choose a sunny to lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. Allow some plants to set seed at the end of the season for a self-sowing colony that returns each year.
